A Life on our Planet

I recently watched David Attenborough’s latest documentary, A Life on our Planet. It’s available on Netflix. I recommend this to anyone. Attenborough is now 93, and most of us have come to know him because of his spectacular celebration of the diversity of nature in his many documentaries. Perhaps Blue Planet I and Blue Planet II are the most well known. There are many, all devoted to demonstrating the natural, living richness of the planet we inhabit.

Kitchen Jewellery

My kitchen stove was built sometime in the ‘1970s. I bought it as part of a full set of cheap, old appliances when I moved into my house ten years ago. Recently a friend came to visit with his family. He reported to me later that his kids had asked him after leaving, “Why is their stove so old?” I loved hearing this, and I loved his answer: “Because it works.” He was exactly right.

Economic Growth – Can it Continue?

Growth is the marker of success in news reports about the state of the economy. Greater growth is considered good, Slow growth or recession is considered bad.

Our economy grows as a percentage of the previous year. This is called exponential growth. A handy trick to estimate the doubling time for anything growing exponentially: Divide the percent growth into 70. If the average annual growth rate is 2.0%, Canada’s economy doubles in 35 years.
